stellel: Hello! Christelle here, customer Experience for @batchblue software… #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Hi everyone, first time to this chat, saw @mikestenger here so figured it was worth checking out. #sbbuzz
sbbuzz: Tonight’s topic is leadership opportunities for small biz owner. Send me any questions you want discussed with the group. #sbbuzz
eproulx: #sbbuzz I’m Erik Proulx. Maker of lemonademovie.com and blogger at pleasefeedtheanimals.com. Evolving business daily.
sbbuzz: Q1 What does it mean to be a leader? In what ways are you a leader in your business or community? #sbbuzz
kimbrater: Hi all #sbbuzz. I’m Kim, partner @AntHillMarketing a brand development and marketing firm in Portland.
bradfordshimp: Q1 – Leadership is about serving and sharing. #sbbuzz
pmohara: @eproulx Hiya Eric – nice to see you here! Are you bringing your movie to Providence, yet? #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @sbbuzz Being a leader means having vision, passion, courage, commitment and focus. #sbbuzz
mikestenger: Q1: Being a leader means being at the center of serving & helping those in ur niche or profession. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: btw, I am owner w/wife of a BnB, @BonnyPeacock, in Ohio, and also have a FT day job. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: The leader passes the glory to others when things go well and takes the bullet when things don’t. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: Q1: Leadership is about not being afraid to make mistakes and taking the heat when things go awry…and then fixing them. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Leadership means taking chances and stepping out before others do. #sbbuzz
eproulx: Q1: Leadership is moving target for me. But mostly means being so passionate about what you do that others want to do it with you. #sbbuzz
mikestenger: Q1: To be a true leader, u must have passion, dedication, & a desire to help others IMO. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: In a small biz setting, leadership means positioning your company for growth as well as taking out the trash. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @mikestenger Yep. Passion, courage, vision, focus and commitment. That’s leadership. #sbbuzz
sbbuzz: Q2 from @rongraham1 which is more important: geographical community leader, business-type leader or Internet community leader. Why? #sbbuzz
wvpmc: Q2 – for what purpose? each has its place #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Q2 depends on nature of your business, and can shift day to day. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @eproulx Agree. Passion is a huge part of it. But not all. #sbbuzz
pmohara: Q1 I find leadership is more about communicating the goal and empowering others to accomplish it. Less about me doing it myself. #sbbuzz
mikestenger: YES! @kimbrater made a GR8 point. Likewise, if u can’t grow urself, how can u expect to grow anything else? #sbbuzz
GetPushing: Hello! I’m a PR/marketing/sm firm owner. 3 years. New to #sbbuzz.
scoblitz: @sbbuzz Q2) hi all – sorry I’m late. I think it depends upon the nature and scope of your goal. Each has its merits. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Q1, @pmohara Not always doing it yourself, but, being willing to get in the trenches with the troops when needed. #sbbuzz
GetPushing: Q1 leadership is more about communicating the goal & empowering others to accomplish it. Less about me doing it myself. #sbbuzz RT @pmohara
GetPushing: Q1 Setting an example & framework create the tools for others to follow your leadership. #sbbuzz
kcolaco: @pmohara well said #sbbuzz
kimbrater: Q2: Why separate these “types” of leadership? They are intertwined in my mind. #sbbuzz
pmohara: @PatRobeck1ofHis Yes, I agree. Hard part is knowing when you’re being helpful in the trenches & when you’re needed elsewhere. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @kimbrater, so you do not recognize three separate, and often independent, audiences? Oh, afraid I can’t quite agree with you there. #sbbuzz
jonathanfields: @eproulx To me, leadership is about putting service before supremacy. Invert the funnel. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @pmohara @PatRobeck1ofHis leadership also means letting go and trusting the ppl you hire. If you hire great ppl they will deliver #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 Of course there are always different audiences, but leadership is leadership…you don’t change it based on audience. #sbbuzz
GetPushing: Q2 Now really effective leadership requires a bit of all 3. Community leadership brings together geo & business, as applicable. #sbbuzz
wvpmc: Some overlap, but key differences between manager and leader – small biz owner ideally is both #sbbuzz
sbbuzz: Q3 Does leadership in your community or industry mean success for your business? #sbbuzz
pmohara: @kimbrater great point! #sbbuzz
GetPushing: @eproulx To me, leadership is about putting service before supremacy. Invert the funnel. #sbbuzz (via @jonathanfields) very good point
kimbrater: Q3: Leadership doesn’t always equal success…it depends on how you define success. #sbbuzz
bradfordshimp: Q3 – I don’t think its an automatic correlation. #sbbuzz
GetPushing: Q3 Not necessarily, but it helps, boosts connections therefore opportunities. #sbbuzz
bradfordshimp: Q3 – Part of it is that someone may be better at something like communication then they are at their business. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Q2&3, Leadership doesn’t always mean having employees, you lead your business community, neighborhood, networks online. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @kimbrater, can’t agree with you there either, I’m afraid. You may not change principles, but actions do change based on need. #sbbuzz
mikestenger: Q3: It does when that leadership is used properly & action is taken, especially of those involved. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 We’ll agree to disagree then. #sbbuzz
wvpmc: Q3 can certainly help, but no guarantee – networking usually benefits co #sbbuzz
Kennybosco: Q3 As an artist,a leader doesn’t have to be a success in business to be a valued leader necessarily. IMHO. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @kimbrater, that happens to me at least once weekly. LOL #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Depends on what you call success, if you lead a group off a cliff, you may be a leader, but success may be a stretch. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 That makes two of us then 😉 #sbbuzz
scoblitz: @sbbuzz Q3 I don’t think it guarantees success by any means. May be more opportunity or a “personal success.” #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @kimbrater, I have an interesting follow-up for you then. What’s more important for the leader: to understand or to be understood? #sbbuzz
pmohara: Q3 I hate the idea of pursuing leadership for leadership sake. I want my business to succeed, not to be followed. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 Interesting q…let’s post to the group. “What’s more imp for the leader: to understand or to be understood?” #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: I don’t think a leaders goal is to be a leader, but, they desire some outcome. #sbbuzz
sbbuzz: Q4 What opportunities have you found for leadership in your communtiy or industry? #sbbuzz
icebluebanana: Q2 none. all are needed for a community to succeed. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 Equally important for a leader. You have to be able to listen to take action but also give direction for other to act. #sbbuzz
jmanos: @kimbrater @rongraham To be understood… #sbbuzz #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: @kimbrater Needs to make the vision understood, to accomplish mission, but, needs to understand audience. #sbbuzz
wvpmc: to understand or be understood? depends on the leader, depends on his desired outcome #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @jmanos, I argue that there is no being understood without we understand first. Otherwise, we’re doing “command and control.” #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @wvpmc, now, now, no more “depends.” You have some awesome experience. I, for one, wanna hear it. “=_ #sbbuzz
jmanos: @rongraham1 Very true. But if never understood, is it possible to truly lead others? #sbbuzz #sbbuzz
emilyfitzhugh: @KimBrater chiming in here on that one. I think as a leader it is more important to understand than to be understood. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Q4 Shown others how to be charitable, w/o giving away the farm. #sbbuzz
eproulx: Q4: My community are the vast number of people who are lethargic about their careers.Trying to lead by example, evolve in real time. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @PatRobeck1ofHis Agree…a great leader has the ability to do both well. #sbbuzz
wvpmc: @rongraham1 touche #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @jmanos, true, but this isn’t either-or. You ensure you’re understood by soliciting feedback. You don’t tell ’em and let ’em go. #sbbuzz
pmohara: I vote for understand. I’ve got to get it if there is any hope of ever communicating it to the team. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @emilyfitzhugh They are both important. Have to understand to take action but be understood in order to communicate well. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: I know I need to work on being understood, being a visual person, I talk too fast for some people. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @PatRobeck1ofHis, that’s a rare person who knows himself well enough to recognize his own learning style. LOL #sbbuzz
wvpmc: @rongraham1 my personal leadership style very other directed – but I know many successful leaders who care little what others think #sbbuzz
pmohara: My favorite type of leader RT @eproulx: Q4: My community are people who are lethargic about careers.Trying to lead by example. #sbbuzz
emilyfitzhugh: @KimBrater I have been in that roll many a time. Handling budget, Social Media, management, then dragging boxes to recycling 🙂 #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: Passion may get folks motivated, but, when they hit a rough spot, if they don’t understand the plan, they make bad decisions. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @wvpmc, you’re right. But we are not talking about the opinions of others. We’re talking about understanding. Do we HEAR ’em? #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: @rongraham1 I think in big pictures. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @PatRobeck1ofHis Ain’t that the truth. Passion is great, but lots of ppl are passionate. But listening and communicating is critical #sbbuzz
wvpmc: @rongraham1 some don’t and apparently don’t need to #sbbuzz
pmohara: So true RT @PatRobeck1ofHis: Passion get folks motivated, but if they don’t understand the plan, they make bad decisions. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @PatRobeck1ofHis, if you gotta do it, go big or go home is what I say. LOL #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 You can’t “hear ’em” if you don’t listen. They can’t hear you if you don’t understand and communicate. #sbbuzz
eproulx: @PatRobeck1ofHis So much of being a leader is just deciding to be. Passion is the first great step. Confidence can be learned. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @rongraham1 @PatRobeck1ofHis “go big or go home” –> my mantra of the week. Awesome. #sbbuzz
Kennybosco: @eproulx Well said on Q4. Leadership in my community has led to the trap of too much compromise. #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @wvpmc, I probably need an example, but it sounds like a “command and control” model. Works for some, no doubt; I don’t care for it. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @eproulx You really think confidence can be learned? #sbbuzz
emilyfitzhugh: @KimBrater yes! And as a leader, internally understanding team & their thoughts, feedback, I think creates strong culture>strong biz #sbbuzz
bradfordshimp: Sometimes being the leader is just to get sick of being scared to step out, or get sick of sitting on the bench. #sbbuzz
bradfordshimp: @kimbrater I think confidence can be learned through practice. Its kind of like exercise. #sbbuzz
eproulx: @kimbrater Absolutely. It’s learned through incremental successes. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: I think I learned it as I matured. RT @kimbrater: @eproulx You really think confidence can be learned? #sbbuzz
pmohara: @kimbrater @eproulx I think confidence comes from experience. Maybe not learned in traditional sense, but improved over time. #sbbuzz
PatRobeck1ofHis: @bradfordshimp Right, you don’t see the right stuff happening, and step up to make something happen. #sbbuzz
sbbuzz: ANother chat flies by. It is now Pitch Time. Please tell us a little about your business. #sbbuzz
wvpmc: I think a good leader listens to input, facilitates positive skills of the team, isn’t afraid to make tough decisions when needed #sbbuzz
rongraham1: @kimbrater, can confidence be learned? I don’t wanna go all Law of Attraction here, but Natalie Merchant speaks to it… (1/2) #sbbuzz
bradfordshimp: @PatRobeck1ofHis Yeah, that is how it works for me, anyway. #sbbuzz
kimbrater: @pmohara Your def makes sense. Improved makes sense bec there’s a part of confidence that you either have or you don’t. #sbbuzz @eproulx
